The Somali Government is accused of selling the Afisione tent in the Halane compound, where indirect elections previously took place

Sources from Halane in Mogadishu report that the government has sold the afisione tent to Somali businessmen. Reports indicate that AUSSOM is opposing this action and attempting to neutralize the situation, as the tent served as a base for AUSSOM forces.

This comes amidst disagreement over the election model between President Hassan’s government and the majority of opposition leaders. The government asserts that there will be no more indirect elections, while opposition leaders contend that the path to one person, one vote is not yet clear and cannot be achieved within the next year and a half.

However, the afisione tent issue is not merely a concern about the sale of public property. It can also be interpreted as a message from the government signaling the end of elections held under the tent and the country’s transition to its first one person, one vote election in May 2026.

President Hassan and his administration have passed an election law in parliament, while the majority of opposition leaders and two Federal Member States oppose it and consider it null and void.
