Luuq, Jubaland State, 23 October 2024 – At least 30,000 people have been displaced by ongoing clan violence in Luuq district, Jubaland State, Somalia, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The ongoing conflict, which erupted in July, has forced thousands of families to flee their homes. Many have sought refuge in areas surrounding Luuq town, including Yurkud and Ceelbon, while others have found shelter within the town itself and in the Xero Kowad area.
The security situation remains volatile despite ongoing peace negotiations, severely limiting humanitarian access to those in need. This has resulted in critical shortages of food, shelter, water, sanitation, and basic healthcare for the displaced population.
“The situation in Luuq is dire,” said [Name and Title of OCHA official]. “Thousands of people have been forced from their homes, and their basic needs are not being met. The ongoing violence and limited access are major obstacles to providing much-needed assistance.”
Humanitarian partners have initiated response planning, including mapping areas of displacement and registering displaced families for food and cash assistance. However, insecurity continues to hinder their efforts.
The recent violence has also disrupted the education of many children in the district.
This Flash Update is prepared by OCHA in coordination with humanitarian partners and authorities in Somalia. The next update will be issued as soon as additional information is available.
